Your province needs metal for construction, military and siege. You can either acquire metal through trade, or more commonly, through mining. Setting up a mining campaign allows you to dig ores from a closeby mine and later extract the much needed metals from there ores.
The amount of campaigns you can run in parallel may vary as the game develops.

Starting a mining campaign takes a little time. There are two distinct parts to a mining campaign, as listed and explained below:
- Miners: Miners work in the chosen mines and dig ores. The more workers you assign to a mine, the more ores they will find.
- To be able to hire miners, you need to first research and then build Miner Camps.
- Depending on the level of the chosen mine, there may be a limit to the amount of miners you can assign on the mining project.
- Caravans: Caravans are transport units that pickup the ores from your miners, and transport them back to your village warehouse. Once the ores have been stored in your warehouse, your Metal Extractors can extract metal from the ores.
- In order to hire Transport Units, you need to first research and then build Barracks.
- Transport units require wood, so make sure you have a good timber supply before you hire them. They also have a high upkeep, so keep a tight eye on your finances.
Once you are able to hire both miners and transport units, you are ready to start a mining campaign.
If, at anytime, you wish to change your route, simply order your mining army to stop when it reaches your village warehouse, and then update the route as you see fit.
